Headaches and Migraines

While the terms headache and migraines are often used as if they are the same thing, nothing could be farther from the truth. Headache is only one symptom of the complex neurological disorder known as a migraine. Chiropractic treatment is often successful in both cases, however, as a chiropractor takes a whole-body or holistic approach to both problems. At Collins Chiropractic Center in Birmingham, Alabama, we can help relieve your pain and promote overall health.

Headaches and Migraines Treatment

Migraines vs. Headaches

Headaches can result from muscle tension, allergies, spinal alignment problems, poor posture or lack of exercise. Migraines are actually a neurological disorder. A painful, often debilitating headache is only one of the symptoms of a migraine. In addition, the sufferer may see flashing lights or have other visual changes, become nauseated and vomit, or have increased sensitivity to light. Other sensory changes may also occur and in some cases, symptoms can mimic a stroke, with temporary paralysis or dizziness. Although medications are available for migraine treatment, they may have side effects.

Headache and Migraine Causes

While the exact mechanism that triggers a migraine has never been identified, vascular changes in the brain seem to be the primary cause of symptoms. People who have migraines can be triggered by certain foods, scents or flashing lights. Excessive stress can also be a factor. Genetics plays a role, as migraines are often common in families, and women are more susceptible than men. For other types of headaches, men and women suffer equally. Poor posture and lack of muscle strength in the neck can contribute to “normal” headaches. Some people suffer from both kinds of headaches, which makes diagnosis and treatment more complex.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches and Migraines

Treatment always depends on the cause of the problem. Misalignment in the neck may be the source of a headache and can be corrected with a spinal adjustment. Postural problems like carrying the head thrust forward can cause tension headaches; a postural analysis will quickly reveal if this is the case. Massage therapy relieves muscle tension. For migraines, the chiropractor will look at other factors. For example, nutrition is often very important in migraine treatment, as is stress reduction. At the same time, spinal alignment problems can add a musculoskeletal component to migraine pain and must be assessed as well.
